As Director-General of the Department of State Development, Tourism and Innovation, Damien Walker is leading the Queensland Government agenda to drive economic growth and create jobs for Queenslanders.
Damien works to maximise opportunities for economic development through attracting investment into the state, including private sector investment in key sectors and emerging industries to stimulate economic growth and create jobs. This includes creating the conditions for sustainable economic and jobs growth by facilitating a pipeline of public and private infrastructure.
He also leads the department, working with its portfolio partner Tourism and Events Queensland, to strengthen and grow Queensland's visitor economy, through developing tourism policy, tourism investment attraction, infrastructure and access, industry engagement and major events as well as working closely with Study Queensland to support the international education sector.
Damien works collaboratively with other government agencies to further the Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland vision for the future and investment in a stronger Queensland economy. This $755 million innovation initiative is supporting programs and activities that drive innovation, build on our natural advantages, and help raise our profile as an attractive investment destination in partnership with industry, businesses, universities, start-ups, investors and the Queensland Chief Entrepreneur.
His responsibilities extend to supporting the portfolio work in relation to the Digital Economy.
Damien is a former Director-General of the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games, where he successfully led the Queensland Government’s delivery of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, and the Department of Tourism, Major Events and Small Business from October 2016.
Damien is Chair of The Cross River Rail Delivery Board.

Before leaving Adelaide to live in Queensland, Damien held senior executive roles in the South Australian Government in infrastructure planning and delivery, investment facilitation, contract management and reform implementation.
Damien holds academic qualifications in public policy and planning, and has broad experience, particularly in the economic development and strategic planning arena.
Damien is a champion for gender equity in the workplace and the prevention of domestic and family violence in all our communities. He is also passionate about delivering initiatives to create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
