The Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan (Reef 2050) is the most comprehensive plan ever developed to secure the health and resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
Developed in partnership by the Australian and Queensland governments, the plan's vision is:
Under Reef 2050, the Queensland Government is implementing a number of key port-related actions and commitments to meet a range of outcomes for the reef.
The Sustainable Ports Development Act 2015 (Ports Act) is the legislative mechanism for the implementation of a number of these actions and commitments.
Key port-related actions of Reef 2050 and their implementation mechanism are outlined below.
|Protect greenfield areas by restricting new port development in and adjoining the GBRWHA to within current port limits. These port limits are long-established and fixed in regulations under the Transport Infrastructure Act 1994 (Qld) (EHA21)||Ports Act|

|Restrict capital dredging for the development of new or expansion of existing port facilities to within the regulated port limits of Gladstone, Hay Point–Mackay, Abbot Point and Townsville (WQA14)||Ports Act|
|In 2015 legislate to ban sea-based disposal of capital dredge material in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and in the balance of the GBRWHA from port-related capital dredging (WQA18)||Ports Act|
